Rain Caps serve multiple purposes which include preventing rain, snow and other debris from getting into the chimney, as well as preventing animals and other critters from taking up real estate in the chimney flue system/chimney. Rain Caps can also reduce down-draft, or the circulation of air back into the chimney. Down-draft can be detected by “ smokey smells” coming from the fireplace. If a chimney is not tall enough, or if there are large trees near the top of the chimney, these can be the cause a down-draft to occur. Down-draft is not ideal, just…so it is clear.

Rain Caps can differ in size and material. Rain Caps are most often fabricated from galvanized steel. Here at Chimney & Masonry Outfitters, we use Rain Caps that are fabricated from Stainless Steel. And, a great side-note: all Rain Caps you purchase from us and have installed by B+E, come with a lifetime manufacturer warranty.

If you see water at the bottom of the fireplace, or hear the occasional water in the flue system, head outdoors and take a look at the top of your chimney to see if you have a rain cap. If you’re not sure whether or not there is one up there, give us a call and we can come out and address this with you – a Rain Cap is an easy solution to multiple chimney related issues.
